Always hang a curtain around the fascia of the layout baseboard. This way, your wife won't be able to see the little globules of solder that have dropped on "her" carpet while you were underneath the layout wiring up.
A second advantage, is that you can then hide your latest acquisitions behind the curtain until she has cooled off about the credit card statement.
